Careers Event | Cover Letters in Germany – Workshop
Event Details
Host: MA Martyna Zmijewska, Careers Service Advisor and MA Paul Tran, Careers Service Advisor
Venue: Room 309, Alte Post Berlin Campus
Time: 13:00 Europe/Berlin
Date: 16 May 2024
The art of writing up a cover letter has not completely been forgotten in Germany. Most organisations operating in or from this country, in fact, still require the document as part of their application process.
This can be requested in the traditional form of an A4 letter accompanying your CV or as an “Motivation Statement” or “Additional Information” field which needs to be filled out when you submit an application online.
Do not be fooled into thinking that this element can be left out at will from your application routine only because it’s not explicitly mentioned among the requirements or the online field is not marked as “mandatory”. On the contrary, you should always have a skeleton cover letter template available that can be further customized to the role you apply to. In most cases you will be expected to upload it or to fill in that online field with suitable content .
In this workshop you will learn:
- about the correct formatting of a cover letter in the English language for the German market
- what needs to be included in the document in terms of content
- what can be left our of the document in terms of content
- how you can create an impactful cover letter/motivation statement that will boost your application success rate
- how the cover letter should link to the JD
- how the cover letter should complement the CV
- emails functioning as “cover letters”
Successful examples of cover letters from other students (anonymised) will also be showcased for your reference.
